Nursing Home to be Fined for Overadministering Morphine

In Chapel Hill, regulators announced this week their plans to fine a local nursing home where a nurse stands accused of overmedicating patients with the drug morphine.

According to North Carolina Health and Human Services spokesman Jim Jones, DHHS is requesting a $20,000 fine for Britthaven nursing home, which is located on region law.  The amount of the fine is the maximum allowed by law.

Angela Almore, a former employee of Britthaven, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder and six counts of felony patient abuse for her alleged maltreatment of the residents at the nursing home.

Almore is accused of overmedicating seven patients with morphine and prosecutors say she may have over administered the drug to make the patients more manageable.  In February, 84 year old Rachel Alice Smith Holliday died as a result of pneumonia due to morphine toxicity.
