Study Reveals Alarming Sex Abuse Statistics

A study released by the Rape Crisis Network in Ireland reveal some disturbing facts about sexual abuse. After speaking with victims at 13 centers across the country, researchers found that half of all the people who had sought help had been abused by a family member as a child. In addition, seven out of ten of those victims had had more than one perpetrator involved.

Of those who were abused during childhood, nearly all of them report that the abuse still affects their daily lives.

There are also victims who were sexually abused as adults, one-third of them in fact. Women are more likely to become victims in the family home to the hands of a current or ex-partner. However, these numbers could be greater across the country as the study revealed that one in six people using a rape crisis center had told nobody else about their encounter.

Yet Caroline Counihan, Director of Rape Crisis Network Ireland, says that the number of reported incidents is thought to have risen to four out of ten cases.
