Alarming Dog Bite Statistics

Can you guess how many dog bites occur per year in the United States? 

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly 4.5 million dog bites are reported each year. However, this number may be low as there are 75 million dogs that live in the U.S., and not all dog bites are reported and/or treated. Of these bites, 88,000 victims seek emergency medical care in hospitals and clinics. 

Although most bites do not cause serious damage, some can and do. Bites have been known to cause significant damage to the tissues under the skin, such a blood vessels, tendons, bones and nerves. Believe it or not, 30,000 victims need reconstructive surgery each year, and 15 to 20 people die as a result of dog bites.
