Facility Fined for Hazardous Work Conditions

After a 24-year-old worker lost his life earlier this year at a plant in North Carolina, the facility has since been fined $30,000 for maintaining hazardous working conditions.

According to official documents, the young man was doing routine maintenance on a coal fire steam unit when it exploded. The incident took his life and placed the plant under immediate scrutiny by the Occupational and Safety Health Administration as well as the North Carolina Department of Labor.

Upon investigating the plant, the owners received noticed of nine violations that had been uncovered. These violations included energy isolation and not telling employees about the dangers of working in confined spaces. The company has 15 days from receipt of the notice to file a complaint with the Labor Department, request a hearing with OSHA or simply pay the fines.
