  Woman Killed during Pedestrian Accident
Posted By Lanier Law Group

This week in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, it is reported that a pedestrian died after being hit early Tuesday morning by a car. The accident occurred on US-17.

North Myrtle Beach spokeswoman Nicole Aiello says that police received a call at 1:31 AM reporting that a pedestrian had been hit near Cracker Barrel restaurant on Highway 17. The person that called said it appeared to be a hit and run accident.

Following the call, the Horry County Coroner's Office said that 21-year-old Corissa L. Irvin was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The office said that Irvin suffered internal injuries as a result of the collision and had been working in North Myrtle Beach at a business in Barefoot Landing over the summer.

Following the collision, investigators shut down two northbound lanes of US-17 and the South Carolina Highway Patrol was called to assist with the investigation of the accident. The South Carolina Highway Patrol believes that the vehicle that hit the pedestrian may have sustained front-end damage near the right headlight as the results of the collision.  Police say that the car may have also suffered windshield damage and are asking the public to offer assistance in finding the driver.

Underage DWI Offender Hits 3 Pedestrians
Posted By Lanier Law Group

In Charlotte, it is reported that a 19 year old woman was driving under the influence (DUI) when she hit three pedestrians who were leaving a bar in Elizabeth.

Officers say that 19 year old Kirstie Pienta crashed her car into Mike Hayes and two of his friends outside of Jackalope Jacks on Sunday at 2 AM.   Mike Hayes and Damion Jenkins did not suffer serious injuries.  However, during the pedestrian accident, the third walker (Danielle Moore) was hit squarely by the front of Pienta's Mercedes Benz.  Allegedly, Moore was carried 100 feet and had to be rushed to Carolina Medical Center, where she is now in fair condition.

After striking the three pedestrians, Pientas traveled off of the road, went across a nearby sidewalk and then struck a parking sign before slammied into a tree.  She is in serious condition at CMC.  Two months ago, Pientas was arrested for DWI by police.

In the state of North Carolina, the legal limit for drivers age 21 is 0.08% and people are not allowed to drink alcohol until they are 21 years of age.  Following her first DWI, Pientas license was revoked, but she continued to drive.  It is said that she will be charged with DWI, reckless driving and driving after underage drinking in connection with a crash.

Lawsuit Filed After Blind Pedestrian Gets Hit By Bus
Posted By Lanier Law Group

After being hit by a city bus while crossing a crosswalk, a blind man has filed a pedestrian accident lawsuit against the Des Moines Area Regional Transit Authority (DART). In his lawsuit, Roger D. Christenson claims the driver of the bus, Susan Jane Leveke-Meyers, had worked an "unsafe number of hours," failed to follow basic safety protocol, and was not properly trained.

Christenson claims he had the right-of-way as he crossed an intersection in a crosswalk with the "walk signal" showing. As he was crossing he was hit by a DART bus being driven by Leveke-Meyers. He claims DART should be liable for his injuries "given what it knew concerning [Leveke-Meyers'] lack of competence, and given its conduct in encouraging or compelling Susan Jane Leveke-Meyers to work an unsafe number of hours in the bus" prior to the accident. DART spokesman Gunnar Olson acknowledged that Leveke-Meyers had made an error and said he hopes the agency can reach an agreement with Christenson.

Christenson, who claims he suffered two broken ribs and a head injury in the accident, wants to be compensated for his medical expenses, pain and suffering, and other losses.

At this time a lawsuit has not been filed against Leveke-Meyers, however she was fired by DART shortly after the accident.
