Garner, NC Man Killed in Drunk Driving Accident

When Results Matter Most, Hire a Heavyweight

In April 26th, 2014, a drunk driving collision had horrific consequences for Rex Todd of Garner, North Carolina, and his wife, Mary Lou. Mr. and Mrs. Todd were driving west on Interstate 440 near the I-40 exit for Jones Franklin Road when an eastbound pick-up driven by Jacob Press of Raleigh crossed the median and four lanes of traffic before colliding with the Todds’ Toyota Prius.

Witnesses reported that the impact of the accident pushed both vehicles off the road into a stand of trees. Approximately a dozen passersby stopped to try and help victims of the accident as smoke poured from the truck and deployed airbags hung out car windows.

Trapped in their vehicle, Mr. and Mrs. Todd struggled to retain consciousness. Mr. Todd succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the hospital, while his wife continues to recover.

Mr. Todd, who was 67 years old, along with his wife, 66, enjoyed a fine reputation for their professional and civic support of their town and church. Serving as the Garner Economic Development Director, Rex was highly respected for his vision and ability, and his community will all feel the loss.

Mr. Press, the 21-year-old driver of the pick-up truck, was injured but is expected to recover. He faces a number of charges, including the following:

  • Driving while impaired
  • Careless and reckless driving
  • Felony death by motor vehicle
  • Felony serious injury by motor vehicle

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that one person is killed every 51 minutes in the United States in an alcohol-related accident — totaling approximately 10,000 fatalities in 2012 alone.

When a drunk driver causes a serious or fatal accident in North Carolina, victims have a right to take legal action. If you were injured or lost a loved one because of a drunk driver’s actions, consult an attorney to explore your options.
