Misdiagnosis & Improper Treatment Lead to Patient’s Death

Posted on Aug 15, 2012 3:05pm PDT

Lazaro Rodriguez, a 40-year-old patient of Delray Medical Center, suffered a fatal heart attack while at home, after being released from the hospital's emergency room just a few days earlier. It all started when Rodriguez was admitted to the ER around 8:30 p.m. on January 12, 2011, after complaining of debilitating chest pains. He was seen by the facility's doctors and given tests to diagnose the problem. Shortly after, he was given over to two specialists—Fernando Rivera, a radiologist, and Rodolfo Carrillo-Jimenez, a cardiologist—in order obtain further treatment. The two doctors reviewed the ER's report, including the results of a coronary CTA, and decided to send him home with nothing more than some aspirin and ibuprofen.

After returning home, however, Rodriguez when into cardiac arrest just two days later and subsequently died of the attack. As a result, his wife, Joanne Rodriguez, is pursuing compensation for his wrongful death, seeking more than $50,000 in damages. According to the medical malpractice lawsuit that has been filed against the Delray Medical Center and the doctors that had failed to properly treat the victim, the specialists should have recognized the signs that something was wrong after looking at the results of the coronary CTA that was conducted by the hospital's ER—which is a type of X-ray that is used to identify any problems in the heart, including blocked arteries that may potentially lead to a heart attack.

As a result, it has been alleged that the two doctors had acted negligently in caring for the patient by clearly misreading the results. They had stated that his heart looked fine, yet the results actually appeared to be abnormal, as they showed signs of blocked arteries—which consequently resulted in the heart attack that killed the patient. In lieu of this evidence and the fact that Dr. Carrillo-Jimenez had stopped Rodriguez's cardiac medications prematurely, the victim's wife is confident in her case against the medical facility. If you or a loved one has been misdiagnosed or improperly treated by a medical professional, as well, you should not hesitate to take similar action.
