A woman in Des Plaines is attempting to sue police over the wrongful death of her son. The young man, Krzysztof Kaczor, 24, of Elmwood Park, was seen with an ax when police responded to a shots fired call.
When they arrived at the 400 block of East Washington Avenue, they asked him to drop the weapon.
According to police reports, he did not listen to the commands and ran at the officers instead. They responded by shooting him fatally four times. His mother, Danuta Kaczor, is adamant that her son was not a threat to the police. "Even if he was carrying an ax, (the officer) could have shot him in the leg," states her attorney, Jay Deratany. He hopes to prove that Krzyzstof was not an imminent threat to the responding officers.
The officer responsible for shooting the young man was placed on administrative leave for a week, the standard procedure after an incident like this. Des Plaines Chief Jim Prandini added that the Illinois State Police Public Integrity Task Force thoroughly investigated the incident and found no reason not to justify it.
