Motorcycle accidents are devastatingly frequent. In fact, there have been about 148,000 motorcycle crashes in North Carolina since 1966. In 2008, there were 96,000 injured by motorcycle accidents nation-wide and 159 people killed in North Carolina while on a motorcycle. Because the driver is so exposed, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association reports that a motorcyclist is about 37 times more likely to die in an accident than a motorist in a car. Motorcycles are hard to control without experience, and sometimes they can come with immediate risks. People can’t see motorcycles well, and the small compact vehicles can hide in a blind spot. Because motorcyclists tend to weave through traffic, they can be sideswiped by a car that is changing lanes. When hit at highway speeds, the impact can be fatal.
Just yesterday, a man from Broadway, North Carolina was riding his motorcycle in Spring Lake and ran off the road. He struck a mailbox and flew off of his vehicle, hitting the pavement hard. The 24-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. While the wreck is still under investigation, the police don’t seem to think that the man was speeding when he hit the mailbox. Had another car been involved in this collision, it may have created a significant lawsuit. The person at fault could have been held responsible for the cyclist's death, and been compelled to pay his family damages for a wrongful death. If your loved one died in a motorcycle accident, or was seriously injured and you can place blame on another car involved or a malfunction of the motorcycle, then you may want to talk to a personal injury attorney about seeking damages. While money cannot recover your loved one, you may able to use your settlement to go on a vacation and mourn in peace, or provide yourself with extra comforts to help you cope.
