A workplace accident has prompted one state to fine the town in which it happened.
After investigating the death of a 48-year-old employee, the North Carolina Department of Labor has decided to fine the town in which she worked. At the time of her death, the employee was riding a lawnmower along a busy street, performing her daily job duties.
As a five-year veteran of the department, her friends and family were shocked to learn about the tragic accident.
Based on the evidence found at the scene, it appeared as though the lawnmower flipped over in a drainage culvert, so the town was fined $2,100. This is for a serious violation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina under which the employee should always be protected from harm.
It was later determined that the drainage culvert was too steep to safely accommodate a riding lawnmower. Additionally, OSHA felt the employee had not received proper operational training for the lawnmower on which she was riding.
