To qualify for Social Security disability, you must meet very stringent requirements for what the US Social Security office considers a disability. In order to qualify for Social Security disability, you must have an injury or medical condition that prevents you from doing the work you did before, severely limits your ability to do another type of work, and it is expected to prevent you from doing work for at least one year or until the condition results in death.
Social Security disability is limited to long-term medical conditions because the program assumes that workers have other options for short-term disability coverage, such as state worker's compensation programs, insurance, savings, and investments.
The Social Security disability program is designed to help workers stay afloat in the year or more that they are unable to work. The program also has built-in benefits to help workers get back on the job and work incentives to ease the transition of going back to work if and when that becomes a possibility. In most cases, people who qualify for Social Security disability will receive monthly cash benefits to help them get by until they are able to go back to work.
