What is Social Security Disability Insurance?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is a federal program administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA) that provides financial assistance to individuals who are unable to work due to a qualifying disability. SSDI is intended to offer support to individuals who have paid into the Social Security system through payroll taxes and who have earned a sufficient number of work credits.

Coverage Provided by SSDI:

  • Disability Benefits: SSDI provides monthly cash benefits to eligible individuals who have a qualifying disability that prevents them from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA). The disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death.
  • Medical Coverage: Individuals who receive SSDI benefits may also qualify for Medicare coverage after a waiting period. Medicare provides health insurance coverage, including hospital insurance (Part A) and medical insurance (Part B), which can help with the costs of medical care and treatment.
