More Than 200,000 Jeeps Recalled

Posted on Mar 14, 2012 9:00am PDT

Jeep Liberties that were sold between 2004 and 2005 are being recalled by the Chrysler automobile company due to a defect in the vehicles' rear lower control arms. According to reports that were issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem lies in the fitting of approximately 209,724 Jeep Liberties that were manufactured between July 3, 2003 and July 14, 2005. As described by NHTSA, the rear lower control arms of some Jeep Liberties can rust and eventually break, leading to a loss of car control which could easily result in a crash.

To date, Chrysler has admitted to receiving more than 80 documented complaints of control arm fractures. The Jeeps were sold in the nation's Salt Belt states, and this is where the majority of the vehicles are now registered. Jeep Liberty owners in the following states should be aware of the potential crash problem: Connecticut, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia, Washington D.C., Delaware, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont.

Chrysler has promised to notify owners of the defects and the potential for crashing beginning no later than the end of April 2012. The company will offer to replace the defective automobile arms free of charge. While no serious injuries have yet been reported in conjunction with the product defect, there is no telling just how many people may have been affected. Every day, dozens of car accidents occur on the highways and city roads of states throughout the Salt Belt, and those involving Jeep Liberties could very well have been the cause of a faulty lower control arm that led to lack of control of the vehicle being driven.
